Resident Wellness Resources:
1) YOUR PROGRAM LEADERSHIP Residency is a challenging time. Please know that we, as program leadership, care about you as a person first, and that you should always feel free to reach out to us (PD, APD, Chief Resident, Faculty) if you are having any issues, big or small. We respect your confidentiality and want to help.
2) Psychosocial Rounds during didactics is another place to discuss and get support from colleagues if you are open to sharing. You may be surprised to hear of the commonalities that your colleagues have faced, and their input/experience can be invaluable.
3) NYC Health + Hospitals Housestaff Wellness Webpage is dedicated to all residents cross our system. Referrals, hotlines, online resources, a peer to peer program, helping healers heal, trauma recovery network and a resident information portal is available here: Pages - Home (nychhc.org)

Helping Healers Heal or H3, is the foundational infrastructure for enhanced wellness programming across all service lines of NYC Health + Hospitals to address emotional and psychological needs of all staff.
H3 holistic wellness programming has evolved over the last few years and continues to address the emotional and psychological needs of our staff through debriefs, including, but not limited to: acute reaction to unanticipated and adverse work-related events, reaction to stress, secondary, vicarious, complex, and collective traumatization, as well as compassion fatigue, and burnout.
Initially the H3 program at NYC H+H focused on adverse events (i.e. medication error, patient expiration), but with the arrival of COVID-19, the program saw the need to become more proactive and preventative, reaching out to staff members, establishing relationships, and creating safe spaces to decompress and share personal and professional experiences.
The goal is to provide staff across the system the opportunity to discuss difficult and rarely conversed about experiences that employees face on a daily basis allowing them to bring their entire selves to work and feel comfortable doing so. H3 delivers wellness programming to staff focusing on the 8 Dimensions of Wellness (Spiritual, Emotional, Physical, Social, Occupational, Environmental, Financial, and Intellectual) with the belief that with a healthier and more engaged staff, we will achieve better satisfaction and care for our patients.

6) External Resources (Outside of Our System)
Psychotherapy: Finding a psychotherapist can be daunting. One of our residents has had excellent experience with this group, and has some expertise with medical personnel:

We have no affiliation and cannot vouch for them other than one of our residents has had a good experience, and it was easy to get connected with them.
National Academy of Medicine for Clinician Wellness and Prevention of Burnout
https://nam.edu/clinicianwellbeing/
This is a confidential program that helps physician mental health (mental illness, substance, abuse, chemical dependency), and is nonjudgemental, and supportive. You can self refer or refer a colleague you may be concerned about. This is the main website, with links to the referral process.
Medical Society of the State of New York (MSSNY) Commission on Physician Health (CPH)
CPH provides non-disciplinary, confidential assistance to physicians, residents, medical students, and physician’s assistants experiencing problems from stress and difficult adjustment, emotional, substance abuse and other psychiatric disorders, including psychiatric problems that may arise as a result of medical illness.
CPH provides support and referrals to those participating in the program, but also to those calling in with concerns about physicians including healthcare coworkers, colleagues, and family members. We recommend evaluation, treatment and/or other assistance to our participants, and monitor for progress in recovery from illness. In this way, we can also provide strong advocacy on behalf of the participant to continue their practice as a physician or physician-in-training.
For non-physicians, a similar program is available called the Professional Assistance Program
