Research Core Rotation
Subject(s): To advance resident knowledge of the basic principles of scientific inquiry, including how research is designed, conducted, evaluated, explained to patients and colleagues, and applied to patient care. (ACGME Internal Medicine Program Requirements (IV.A.6.).
Objectives:
Learn the fundamentals of scholarly research
Understand how to formulate a research question
Explore what is known about this topic
Identify a care / systems delivery gap
Design a research study
Test, revise, and implement a research plan
Collect and analyze data
Interpret results
Complete CITI Course for Biomedical Investigators: responsible conduct of research and informed consent.
Write an IRB proposal
Complete an abstract or poster showcasing your work
Present the project succinctly in written format
Create visual displays (slides, posters) to tell the story of your work
Submit project for internal review - Get ready to edit!
Mentors AND Faculty Leadership
Adult Learning Tip: What do you know about these topics? Have you participated in scholarly work in the past? What questions have come to mind? How could you integrate these skills into your research? Use these objectives as a framework for designing a research plan with your mentor.
Time Allotment: A dedicated 2-week section of an X block for a focused learning experience. Longitudinal projects may be carried on in sequential research blocks, not to exceed 4 blocks during the course of residency.

Application components:
Provide a full description of the research project, including background information, care / systems opportunity, proposed plan
Clearly state your role in the project.
Identify a project mentor.
Create timeline for project completion
Return the completed application no less than six weeks prior to the start of the rotation.

At the end of your rotation, your research mentor will be asked to complete an evaluation on your performance. This will reflect your progress on the objectives outlined above. You will have an opportunity to evaluate our rotation as well - we look forward to specific feedback which will help us grow and improve these experiences going forward!
