Women’s Health
Subject(s): Abnormal Uterine Bleeding, Contraception Counseling, PCOS, Taking the Sexual History, LGBTQ+ Health, IPV Screening, Menopause, Female Sexual Dysfunction, Cancer Screenings, Preconception Counseling, STIs, Trauma-Informed Care, Osteoporosis, Gender-Based Bias
Goals:
Understand the available options for contraception and provide appropriate counseling
Become comfortable taking a sexual history and managing issues that may arise including STIs, sexual dysfunction, and IPV
Know the guidelines, tools, and management for cancer screenings
Know the steps to working up abnormal uterine bleeding (AUB) in the pre-menopausal, peri-menopausal, and post-menopausal person
Learn to manage conditions of menopause (vasomotor symptoms, osteoporosis, cardiovascular disease)
Become competent in health care for trans and nonbinary people
Learn first-line steps for pre- and peri-conception health care
Become comfortable addressing gender based bias in the workplace
Objectives:
Complete Online Lecture Series on Abnormal Uterine Bleeding, PCOS, Menopause, and Female Sexual Dysfunction
Attend in person didactic sessions
Complete lab simulations for pap smears and IUD placement
Observe the process for undergoing a mammogram and a transvaginal ultrasound
Create a patient facing resource for a topic of learner’s choice regarding women’s health
Research advocacy topic to present at the end of the block
Participate in standardized patient encounters for taking the sexual history and contraception counseling
Observe and perform pap smears
Adult Learning Tip: What do you know about these topics? Have you cared for patients living with these illnesses? What questions have come to mind? Coming prepared with these questions in mind will help target the elective to best suit your interests.
